Aims Of First Aid

First aid is given to a casualty in an emergency situation for five purposes:

  • To preserve life
  • To protect the unconscious casualty
  • To prevent the condition from worsening
  • To relieve pain
  • To promote recovery

Recognising an Emergency

  • Unusual noises(eg, moaning, crying and calling for help)
  • Unusual sights (eg, broken glass, a fallen chair)
  • Unusual smell
  • Unusual signs and symptoms (Is unconscious, has difficulty breathing, is sweating, has uncharacteristic skin color
  • Unusual Behaviour (slurred or hesitant speech, drowsiness, disorientated)
